12/9/25 Newsletter - Wednesday BIG Action = BIG Local Impact

STRONGER TOGETHER

We're not going to lie.

The next 11 months will be brutal. The noise will get louder.
The lies will get bolder. The cruelty will escalate.

But if we stay focused, if we cut through it together,
we can still hold the line and build back a country
that is a place for ALL TO BELONG, safely and without fear.

And we can start right here - in Nevada County.

Please come to the Nevada Joint Union School District
meeting tomorrow - Wednesday, December 10 at 6pm.

WHY?

You probably have heard about the acts of racial violence in our community.
The most recent incident of hate speech and violence on December 3 was committed by youths ages 18 and 19, and a minor. This is not the first incident.  Last week's violence demonstrates that hate speech, bullying, violence, and racism ARE real issues in our community
- and it's happening in our student population.

Wednesday Action - Your Input is Needed

Nevada Joint Union High School District
Board Meeting
(Stop MAGA on our school boards)

Wednesday, December 10
6:00pm
112 Nevada City Hwy

(at intersection of Nevada City Hwy and Ridge Rd)

At this meeting, the board will be voting on which member will take on the role of Board President. This meeting is our opportunity as community members, parents, staff, and students to let the board know that we want someone who will listen to and act in the interest of students and not publicly demean fellow board members.

As a reminder, current board president Andrew Klein has publicly defamed fellow board members, as well as refused to support the "Every Student Belongs" resolution last spring. He has ignored students and has done nothing as board president to address the issue of hate speech & bullying. And, based on his words, Klein does not believe that the emotional and social wellbeing of students even merits attention. Please note - Klein could be re-elected for another term as President.

Please consider speaking (2min) at the meeting AND/OR emailing to the board! Please attend whether you speak or not!

Here are some talking points -

Representation

  • The School Board President is a public-facing position.

  • This person represents the entire board, not just their personal views.

  • They should not publicly demean other board members or espouse views that are not consistent with the entirety of the board.

Collaboration

  • We need a board president who champions working together with the superintendent and the board trustees. This fosters a collaborative environment whereby all parties work together for the common good of our students, teachers, and schools.

Accountability

  • As a leader, the board president should model the same behavior that we expect for students, teachers, staff, and everyone in the district.

  • If the board president does not follow the board guidelines, they should acknowledge the mistake and make amends (modeling a growth mindset for our students), not pretend that they did nothing wrong.

Understanding of Current Learning Climate

  • The board president should have a good understanding of the current learning environment for students - this includes academic AND emotional and social environments. The current high school population is still dealing with the effects of the pandemic, including social and emotional effects.

Bullying and Harassment

  • The board president needs to take seriously the racial, homophobic, transphobic, and biphobic slurs, harassment, and bullying in our schools

  • Students' concerns should be taken seriously by the board president.

Andrew Klein has failed at each of these bullet points.

Thank you for reading down this far! We know it is Victorian Christmas on Wednesday, but please plan on coming to the board meeting first. The selection of officers is at the beginning (probably about 6:15pm). Prepare any comments to 2 minutes.

Attend AND email your comments to the board: board@njuhsd.com
