California proposition 50, also knows as the “Election Rigging Response Act” is a measure that counters partisan, mid-decade gerrymandering efforts by Republicans in Texas and other states to unfairly shift the U.S. house of representatives permanently in their favor.

The proposition temporarily allows state legislature to replace independent voting district maps with legislature-drawn maps, before returning redistricting to the independent California Citizens Redistricting Commission following the next census.

Since the proposition is posed to the people of California, they are able to decide independently if they agree with the legislation. This is in opposition to Republican efforts to gerrymander, which do not take into account voter wishes, and are enacted unilaterally.
